Communication & promotion strategy + implementation, digital design for Lights On Timisoara 2023
Light installations are visual metaphors. Art pieces that connect us to ourselves and the world. It generates introspection, conversations, moods. I am always something else; something else defined by the viewer. Inventory tells us it's been five years since we took the pulse and relayed their story. Five years of capturing the light for Lights On Romania.
We remembered the past editions while we were in Timișoara, where the most complex Lights On edition so far took place. In Timișoara, culture does not sleep. The city turned into a nocturnal artistic laboratory that for more than a week was both home and office. The scenario repeats itself year after year. Only the form, the context and the objective used differ. We go around the world, guided by the light. We look for the right angle and give visual form to the story even when we drop cameras on our heads or shoot as long as the night lasts.
The Lights On festival aims to highlight all light installations in the best possible way to benefit the artists behind them, as well as to promote the long-term image development of the festival. This will make it more appealing to the public, partners, and sponsors. The festival also aims to attract artists who wish to bring light installations to Romania. Lights On is a unique festival, held in public spaces, free of charge, and takes place during the evening. The festival is not limited to the summer season, and its 'money shots' offer a different experience than typical festival events.
In 2023, our team faced an even greater challenge. We were responsible for developing and implementing the communication strategy, designing some of the festival's offline and online materials, and handling the photography aspect of the Timisoara festival. The festival lasted 10 days, and we spent 4 months preparing for it.
The challenge arose when I photographed the same installation in a different context and environment, altering the story conveyed through the visuals.
These photographs have gone viral on the internet, gaining hundreds of thousands of views on social media, and have been featured extensively on local and national media outlets, including television. They have also been able to attract a large number of participants in each festival edition. Despite the winter weather in many editions of the Lights On festival, people have been motivated to leave their homes and explore each light installation individually. The festival has gained momentum and captured people's attention and curiosity like a small snowball that kept rolling.
